Room 101

May 10, 2013

Dear Parents:
We had a great week in room 101! Here are some highlights of the week, as well as some reminders:
Math: We learned how to use bar models to answer real world multiplication and division problems. Our biggest challenge sometimes is deciding which operation to draw in order to help us solve the problem. We will be having a test over the material next week.
Reading: This week in reading we read a story by Tomi DePaola called The Popcorn Book. It’s quite a “fact-filled” book, but also shows two young boys making popcorn while learning about it. We then each took a fact from the story and wrote it on a piece of paper-you guessed it in the shape of a piece of popcorn. After adding a few popped kernels to our artwork, we then had to sample some popcorn! Reading is delicious!
Science: We are learning about properties, single substances, and mixtures. We made a couple of different interesting mixtures this week that included slim and cornstarch with water. This was a fun way to learn about mixtures!
On Wednesday, May 29th we will be walking to downtown Mt. Pleasant to participate in The Bronze Legends program. We will be traveling from place to place locating the various objects and learning about our community’s history. Then we will be walking to Dairy Queen to work on our money skills by paying for a treat and making sure we received the correct change. Please sign, turn in $2.00, and return the permission by Friday May 17th.
Field Day: Was postponed until next Wednesday, May 15th. If it rains that day, we will have field day in the gym.
Reminders:
·         Field day-May 15th at Island Park
·         Next all school mass on Friday, May 17th (Senior Mass!)
·         Mass on Wednesday, May 22nd
·         No school on May 27th
·         Bronze Legends field trip and last school mass, May 29th
I guess that’s about all for now. Thanks for all you do, and have a great weekend!

About Mrs. Hansen

Hello Second graders and families! Welcome to room 101!
I would like to introduce myself. I am Mrs. Kelly Hansen, and this is my 8th year of teaching second grade at SHA. I have also spent time in First grade, and in the gym teaching grades 1 – 6 in PE.
I have been married for 25 years to Todd Hansen. Todd has had a career in the business world, and currently works for a company called Bolthouse Farms. We have three daughters; Karly (21) a junior at CMU; Erica (18) a senior at SHA; and Sara (16) a junior at SHA.
I have a strong connection and family ties to Sacred Heart, as I am an alumni, class of 1982!  We are having our 30 year class reunion this year! (This also makes me very old!) My father graduated in 1959, and my grandfather in 1927! That makes my children fourth generation attendees/graduates!
I can’t wait to get to know this year’s group of students and parents. I want you to know that you can contact me with any concerns, in whatever method is best for you. My contact information is listed below, and your child matters to me-they are not just my job. I want to do what is best for them, and make this year one they will remember with fondness.
God Bless!
