Dear Parents,

I just love this second grade class! Here are some highlights of the week and reminders:

Catholic Schools Week: Here is a recap of the week ahead:
Monday: Crazy sock day and bowling
Tuesday: Spirit wear/jean day and bingo with mass buddies
Wednesday:  Uniform and Regional mass @ 9:00 AM
Thursday: Uniform, Religion game with partner class in the parish center and guest speaker, Mr. Peace
Friday: Regular Jean day and ice cream social

Math: We have learned many new concepts this week which include solid figure, flat surface, vertex, net, trapezoid, parallelogram, hexagon, side, and angle. Everyone is doing great with the geometry unit so far. When we start to work more with fractions we would like to do an activity using Hersey chocolate bars. If you can donate some chocolate bars to our class that would be greatly appreciate. We have 13 students in our class; we will need 3 packages.

Service Project: During Catholic Schools week we participate in some type of service project. This year we decided to help the soup kitchen and the food truck therefore we are going to have a penny drive. The class with the most pennies will earn a prize. See the SHA newsletter for more details. So please bring in your pennies!

** If you're thinking about attending SHAgala on February 11th but don't know who to sit with, just indicate on your ticket request form that you would like to sit with our grade/class table.  Get to know other parents, have a special Valentine's weekend, and support SHA at the same time!   You might also enjoy volunteering at the event.  You get to visit with parents and attendees and find out if SHAgala is something you might want to attend in the future, and we ALWAYS need volunteers! Check the elementary newsletter for how to sign up!

Mrs. McGuirk and Mrs. McDonald worked with our class on the SHAGALA class project. It is going to be an awesome bookshelf and a class book that will feature all of our writing.  A big thank you goes out to Mrs. McGuirk for her time and hard work.

February Daily News: Your child will have a chance to share with us a member of his/her family that has had an influence on his/her life. We want to know how the family member is related to your child, what his/her job is, what your child likes to do with him/her, the family member’s favorite hobbies or things to do, and anything else you can think of. The schedule was in last week’s Friday folder.

Reminders:
  • Thank you for all the donations for the SHAGALA Pamper Yourself Basket. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and you are helping out our school tremendously.
  • Please be sure your child turns in his/her January Book-it log. The February Book-it log is included in this week’s Friday folder.
  • Please see the special note on Valentine boxes. Make sure your child begins working on his/her Valentine box right away. I attached a class list to help your child write their valentines.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,
Laurie Simon & Katie Lubanski

 About Mrs. Simon

I am very excited to have the opportunity to be your child’s teacher. I’m looking forward to an enjoyable and rewarding school year.

I have been teaching second grade at Sacred Heart Academy since January of 2008. I absolutely love teaching second grade. Prior to teaching at Sacred Heart I taught at St. Cecilia for one year as the third and fourth grade teacher. I received a Bachelor’s Degree from CMU in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Math and Language Arts.

My family is an important part of my life. I am the youngest child of ten. My family continues to grow; I currently have 10 nieces, 20 nephews, and two more on the way. With that being said children play a huge role in my life. I grew up in Beal City and attended St. Joseph the Worker school during my elementary years. In my eyes, nothing compares to a Catholic Education. I am fortunate to be a catholic schoolteacher. I will strive to provide a positive learning experience for my students, just as I was blessed with growing up.

I had a wonderful summer spending time with my 21 month old son, Zack and my husband, Chad. Chad works at the Clare hospital and he is currently continuing his education at Ferris State University. Zack is growing so quickly and keeping me on my toes every minute.
