Sacred Heart Academy
National Honor Society
Membership Selection Process

SacredHeartAcademy’s National Honor Society chapter, Cor Jesu, is a group of Juniors and Seniors who exemplify outstanding scholarship, character, service, and leadership.

Scholarship
A minimum of a 3.5 cumulative high school GPA is required of all NHS members.

Character
Each spring, a list of sophomores and juniors (who are not already in NHS) who have at least a 3.5 GPA (or could have a 3.5 by the end of the year) is given to the faculty of Sacred Heart. Any faculty who has had significant interactions (had in class, coached, etc.) with a student on the list in the past year will rate that student 1-4 on their character, with comments – especially if any low (1 or 2) ratings are given. Their character evaluation is based on the 6 Pillars of Character put forth by the Josephson Institute Center for Youth Ethics: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.

These character evaluations are then given to the Faculty Council, who will use the teacher’s ratings and remarks as well as documented discipline problems over the past year to determine who satisfies the character requirement. This will be done by a majority vote for each student.

Service and Leadership
NHS students will be those who are on pace to meet their required community service goals for graduation from SHA. This means that for a sophomore who has been at SHA since 7th grade, somewhere around 50 hours of documented community service is expected.

The students who are selected by the Faculty Council as having the proper character will then receive a letter and a request for information. The information sheet included asks the student to list leadership and service activities they have done while in high school, as well as other student and community activities, and work experience, recognition, and awards. This sheet requires signatures of supervising adults for activities, as well as a parent and student signature. The letter they receive will also ask them to provide an essay describing those activities, especially how they acted as a leader in the situations they have listed. Additionally, the essay should include an answer to the question “Why should you be selected as a member of NHS?”

After the deadline has passed for the student to submit this information (which will be stated in the letter), the Faculty Council will meet once more. Using the information sheet and essay, as well as their community service on file, they will decide who satisfies the service and leadership requirements. Again, this is done by a majority vote.

At this point, the chapter advisor(s) will meet with the administrative team to review the results. Current NHS advisors are Mr. Josh Taylor and Ms. Jacquie Lacek.

Once all this is completed, the newly accepted members will be notified by letter. They are considered members of NHS, and will be expected to be at all NHS meetings from that point on. They will be formally inducted into the chapter in a ceremony early the next fall. Those who have not been accepted will meet with the Faculty Council, so that it can be explained why they were not accepted, and what they will need to work on to be accepted in the future.
